Giclee print on Hahnemühle photo rag 308gsm

I've always had a bit of an obsession with water flowing from one vessel to another and when I saw this video online of someone trying to articulate Generational Trauma with it, it stuck in my mind.
I haven't painted for almost half a year, and this although not perfect, helps me articulate a concept I've been meaning to express.

Whilst I would almost like to rephrase the word trauma, it all depends on perspective and experiences.
I can't speak for anyone else but my own, but trauma is almost inevitable. Because we are not the last generation nor will we be the next one, we cannot live in their time.

If anything I am hugely grateful for all of the adversity my previous generations went through, from sailing on boats as immigrants to reach new promised lives, to establishing themselves through really rough eras of othering and discrimination.
To be able to then overflow into my generation, where although a little cracked and disillusioned, we have been afforded a much more calm and stable life. Been able to afford the ability to grow something and challenge the notions of the past. My parents and grandparents spent majority of their lives working very hard to survive and provide.

By the time it's reached me, although their principles have bled into me, without them I would not know to appreciate.

The video of us rinsing out all trauma into our next generation, as much as part of me believes we can, part of me also doesn't want to completely irradiate the notion that someone worked hard for them to be here.
It's a huge privilege and one I don't take lightly.
We aren't fixing what's broken, we are merely trying to understand it so that we can approach everything with a much more well rounded standpoint.
